OUR STORY

By Kina Freitag

It was the summer of 2012 and I had just turned fresh 18 so that only meant one thing, heading to Fortitude Valley to find the most ghetto club that I could to dance to R&B all night. When I arrived to the valley I knew exactly which club to go to, Mystique Nightclub of course...

After waiting in line and finally entering I headed straight to the bar to grab myself a drink. Little did I know that straight after I grabbed that drink I would receive a tap on my shoulder by some random guy to take a photo with the photographer, so of course I took a picture with this guy, alI was well once we took the photo. I then turned around (I actually just did a spin) and then standing in front of me was this cute filipino boy with two buttons undone and a huge wooden cross necklace hanging around his neck.

We began to chat against all the loud chattering and bass of the music in the background. He then proceeded to ask me what my name was and I told him my name was “Kina” and to my surprise he said to me confidently “Tina is a nice name”. In true shock, I corrected him and told him Tina wasn't my name and Kina was my name “K-I-N-A!”. As he tried to play it cool, he said  jokingly with a stunned facial expression  “OH!..KINA!...that’s a beautiful name!”. I then asked him what his name was, he then proceeds to ask me to guess? by making weird pointing and wriggling gestures with his fingers and sleeping motions with both his hands. At this point I was looking for an escape plan to get away from this weirdo. After a couple of seconds of him doing his ridiculous hand gestures, I think he started to realised  that he was starting to look like an idiot himself and finally said “Jeff-The-Wiggle”. I soon realised what he was getting at, with the crazy hand movements and the jeff-the-wiggle phrase.

Before I knew it we were dancing away on the dance floor together like there was no tomorrow and after a few booty drops and dougie dance moves we decided to go and grab some fresh air. It was now time to find out a little bit more about each other, so Jeff decided to play 10 questions with me. It was at this point we got to know each other a little better more, and from what started out as 10 questions turned into 10 years of growing and learning about each other each and everyday. And finally on our 10 year anniversary since that night at the club, Jeff asked me the biggest question of all, which led us to this joyful occasion, he asked me to be his wife and I said “YES!”.

THE PROPOSAL

By Jeff Gajelloma

Saturday, 5th of March 2022 - This was the day where we hit our 10 year long milestone of our relationship. With covid restrictions easing and the flooding and rainfall storm events starting to ease in South East Queensland. That Saturday Morning I decided to take Kina out for a hike to Purlingbrook Falls, at Springbrook National Park.

It had been a while since we were able to adventure out due to covid locked down, so we were eager to go out and about. But to ensure that she wasn’t grasping on to the idea that something special wasn’t going to happen. I waited till she was ready and had her active wear on and said “Babe!, let’s just stay in and have a nice day indoors”. With the sadness and disappointment in her face she began to unpack her things from her bag. After a couple of minutes with the sadness on her face, I could not resist laughing and told her that "I was joking and that we should definitely go and celebrate our 10 year anniversary, out and about and not be locked up in home".

After a 50 minute drive and being cautious of hitting any debris on the road from last week's flooding, we arrived at Purlingbrook Falls, where we began the circuit walk to view the waterfall from below. Prior to leaving our home, I have planned with my Twin Brother Jess, that he would arrive early so that he can hide in the bushes, where he can take a snapshot of the proposal. However, after arriving at the park and a quick phone call, I soon realised that Jess was at a different Waterfall National Park, which was 40 minutes away….

After stalling the walk down to the water falls as much as I could, by taking many pit stops to take photos, snake spotting and stoping to pull off some leeches. Once we reach the bottom of the waterfall where we stood minisculely on an old wooden cable-stayed bridge, with our heads tilted back looking up the water falls, and taking in all of natures wonder. I could not hold it any longer and decided to drop on one knee. With the full raging body of water plunging 100m down off from the cliffs and flowing underneath us. We were drenched by gushing winds and water whilst being engulfed with the roaring sounds of water colliding with the rocks below. With our senses and adrenaline highetend, i asked the question,”For every last king needs a queen, If you love me now, so forever hold this ring?” (Song by Tyga - Love Game)..... Like water flowing down the river we found a quiet spot in the rainforest where she eventually said “Yes!”.

Jess managed to make it in time and  was able to capture the photo below.
